Affective Delegation
In my leadership carer I have worked with some fantastic people over the years. Delegation is a important skill to develop as a productive leader. My five aspects of healthy delegation are outlined below:

1: Expectations
The person receiving the request to carry out a piece of work must know the goals and objectives you as a manager are trying to achieve. They need to know what a win looks like in your mind. People always need to know they have done a good job. The question “Why are we doing this?” and “What are we trying to accomplish?” should be answered clearly in their mind.

2: Knowledge
The manager should be sure that proper training, coaching and education have been provided. The manager should always remain available during the process so questions or uncertainties of details, which will naturally arise, can be answered.

3: Resources
Effective delegation means people have adequate resources and money to accomplish the task. Nothing is more frustrating than being asked to complete a project without the tools with which to do it.

4: Accountability
Proper delegation involves follow up and evaluation of the job. Did we achieve the objectives? What could we have done better? What did we learn? This process isn’t meant to be threatening. Done well it is healthy for all concerned.

5: Appreciation
Delegation isn’t complete until the manager recognises the accomplishment of the one who has completed the task.
Delegation is a leader’s most effective methods for success and producing a healthy organisation. To be a productive leader a person has to develop as a good delegator. Enabling people to flourish.
